My sweet and spicy thai basil chicken wings recipe was created by me trying to combine my family’s obsession with anything that has thai basil in it and their love for a basket of chicken wings. Along with my family’s love for Thai basil and chicken wings we have and my obsession with my air fryer and my desire for wanting to turn every recipe of mine into an air fryer recipe came into play. This recipe perfectly highlights the sweet and spicy flavors of Thai food with the light, airy and crispness that comes when using your air fryer! It is perfect to pair for a weeknight meal with some rice and steamed vegetables or as an appetizer for when you have your buddies over for a football or basketball game! There are a few key things you will want to keep in mind when making this recipe. First being that the spice level of Thai chillies vary according to the season. I have had times where I have had to use double the amount of the Thai chillies in this recipe and times where only half a chili was needed. I recommend adding the chili gradually and according to your spice tolerance. That being said, the majority of the time the two chilis have been the perfect amount. Next would be to wait to buy the Thai basil the night before or the morning of when you decide to make this recipe. I recommend that because in my experience Thai basil tends to turn black quickly after you pick it/buy it so you want to use it pretty quickly after buying it. Lastly would be to make sure you are reading the labels correctly when buying the chicken wings. You specifically want to look for wings that are labeled as “party style” because they have the wing and the flat already separated so you do not have to break down the chicken on your own. This will save you a lot of time when cooking and in the clean up process. These wings taste best eaten fresh but if you do have leftovers, I recommend eating them the next day and reheating them in the airfryer to get the skin crispy again. This scenario doesn’t typically take place because these wings are gone in minutes but thought, I would share that tip just in case! I hope you love this recipe as much as I do and my DMs are always open for any tips you may want/need…happy cooking!

Sweet and Spicy Thai Basil Chicken Wings

Method

  1. Thoroughly clean and wash the chicken wings and marinate for 30 minutes. Airfryer at 400 degrees for 20 minutes flipping halfway through. Be sure to generously spray each side of the chicken wing with spray oil before cooking in the air fryer.
  2. Roughly chop or food process the ginger, garlic and Thai chili. In a sauté pan, melt down the butter and sesame oil and cook the paste for 2-3 minutes at low heat until fragrant.
  3. Add in the honey, soy sauce and oyster sauce and cook at low to medium heat for 3-5 minutes. The sauce should be lightly bubbling and then add in the cornstarch slurry.
  4. Let this simmer at low to medium heat for 3-5 minutes until the sauce thickens and can coat the back of a spoon.
  5. Toss in the wings and coat evenly with the sauce and top with the green onions, Thai basil and sesame seeds and enjoy!
