I associate so many fun holidays and memories with friends when making and eating these brown butter rice krispie treats. In terms of desserts, I like to think of these as the ultimate beginner recipe because not only do you get to eat large amounts of marshmallows while making them but they are also fairly easy to make compared to other complicated and detail oriented desserts. These are actually a great activity to do with children or with friends for a night in. They are also a great dessert to take to potlucks, holiday parties or package up for friends and family during all special occasions. In terms of the brown butter, you may be thinking what makes this any different than a normal rice krispie treat recipe? First being that browning your butter enhances your flavor by adding a rich and nutty flavor. What happens is that the caramelized milk solids in the butter give the rice krispie traits a more complex taste. This also causes them to have a chewier consistency compared to normal rice krispie treats. In addition to the chewer texture, the golden brown color adds a visual appeal to the treats. It almost elevates the look of the rice krispie treat. Despite the differences, these rice krispie treats do not require additional ingredients and are still incredibly easy to make. They are also very easily customizable. I personally like to add in extra mini marshmallows for texture and visual appeal but there are numerous other options. For example, if you were to make these for a baby shower or birthday party, I would add pink and blue sprinkles for the baby shower and top it off with sprinkles of the favorite color of the person whose birthday it is. Another way to make them appeal to adults would be by adding in a variety of nuts or dried fruits to give that elevated mature feel. Furthermore, these rice krispie treats stay good for long periods of time. They typically can last up to ten days which makes them a great dessert or snack to make ahead of time. Overall, these are such a staple on my dessert rotation and one of my personal favorites to make for others. I hope you love this recipe as much as I do and my DMs are always open for any tips you may want/need…happy cooking!

Brown Butter Rice Krispie Treats

Method

  1. In a large pot melt down the butter at medium heat for 5-10 minutes . Add in the vanilla extract, cinnamon and salt and mix until everything is evenly combined. Make sure to constantly stir the butter and let it bubble and turn golden brown.
  2. Remove from heat.
  3. Add in 8 cups of mini marshmallows and fold in with the butter until you get a marshmallow fluff consistency.
  4. Next add in the Rice Krispies and gentle lily fold until everything is evenly combined. Then add in the extra 1/2 cup of mini marshmallows until everything is evenly combined.
  5. Add the combined mixture to the baking tray and gently press it in. Make sure not to pack it in tight or else it will affect the texture. Let it rest for 20 minutes. Cut it into squares and enjoy!
